2014 Favourites

So here we are, the last day of 2014. To round up this year I thought I'd share with you some of my favourites of 2014. When I say favourites I don't just mean beauty but life favourites too (wait...I guess that's what memories are!)

I'll start with beauty, I guess 2014 was the year I discovered makeup a bit more. I watched more tutorials, bought more products and practiced. While I'm yet to perfect doing my eyebrows and winged eyeliner can take at least half an hour to get even I am loving makeup, I just wish I had more. My two stand out brands this year are Rimmel and L'Oreal. I've used Rimmel mascara religously this year, from my all time favourite ScandalEyes Volume Flash to the more recent Wonder'Full mascara with Argan Oil (my favourite for daytime), I've loved them! Also for eyes, I've been using their 002 Smokey Brun Glam'Eyes Quad Eyeshadow palette so much and while I am desperate for the Urban Decay Naked Palette, the Rimmel one will suffice for now! I've also loved their 60 second nail polishes. The brush applies smoothly and covers pretty much the whole nail and the colour range is to die for! My favourites are the Caramel Cupcake, Too Cool to Tango and Ring a Ring O'Roses. L'Oreal's Brow Artist pencil has been my go to for my brows. If you've read previous posts you will be aware of my ongoing struggle with my brows but this pencil is definitely the best product I've found!
Caramel Cupcake
For my hair there is only one product that I have repeatedly bought over and over and that is my Argan Oil by Ogx beauty. I mentioned it in a previous favourites post and it deserves extra recognition because it makes my hair so silky soft!

Social media has been a big part of 2014 for me. From developing my tumblr to catching up with the latest vlogs and videos on youtube and finishing series after series on Netflix. It's fair to say I have spent far too much time on the internet. But I guess for me it is my downtime. While I started the year in love with Alfie Deyes and Zoella (and I do still like them) I've discovered new YouTubers or just prefer to watch other vlogs. My top favourite is Hannah Maggs and her perfect little family. The amount of effort that goes into their vlogs is unbelievable and it's them I have to thank for my addiction to James Bay. Lily Pebbles is also another favourite. While I'm still so useless at makeup (especially in comparison to her) I love her weekly vlogs and her tutorials and her style is flawless (I have major wardrobe enzy)! I'm also dying to make her Brookies! Other favourites include Connor Franta, The Saccone-Joly's, Caspar Lee and Colleen and Rachel Ballinger/Miranda.

2014 was a big music year for me with the delightful sound of Sam Smith, the calming tones of James Bay and of course One Direction. Music has always been a release to me but especially this year (it does help that there are so many amazing artists!). My top songs from 2014 are:

  1. Happiness - Chris Malinchak ft MNEK
  2. FOUR Deluxe Edition - One Direction (you didn't expect me to pick a favourite did you?)
  3. Disconnected AND Amnesia - 5 Seconds of Summer
  4. Let It Go -James Bay
  5. You and I (Forever) - Jessie Ware
  6. Beautiful to Me - Olly Murs
  7. Lay Me Down (Acoustic) AND Stay With Me - Sam Smith
  8. Wildest Dreams - Taylor Swift
  9. Jubel - KIingande
  10. Day One- Hobbie Stuart (please go and subscribe to his YouTube channel because he is so underrated!
So, now onto my favourite life moments of 2014! I could make multiple blog posts on this and it still wouldn't be enough so I'll keep it brief. Obviously,(almost) every moment with the rowers has been amazing, especially Seville and the Rowers Ball. Competing for Wales and making new friends  is a definite highlight and making a tumblr friend through rowing (shoutout to Amy) has been so great. I mentioned in my 'Friends are the family you choose' post how grateful I am for my friends sticking by me (in all my moods and through anxious times) so there's no need to do it again (thanks guys).

My top highlights from this year are:
  1. Seeing One Direction at  Wembley
  2. Going to the Summer Ball
  3. Starting this blog
  4. Passing my driving test
  5. Becoming Captain of Boats
  6. Harry Styles replying to me on tumblr
There are many more but I think you're probably all bored by now?

I wish you all the happiest new year ever! And thank you as always for reading my blog!

Christmas!

This year has really been a long one, yet it seems to have flown by and Christmas is already over! I hope you all had a lovely time with your families and friends!

Merry Christmas from me!

I realise and truly appreciate that Christmas isn't about presents. I watched Fabulous Hannah's video (here) on the true meaning of Christmas and it explains exactly how I feel. Yes, I love getting presents (lets be honest, who doesn't?!) there is nothing like opening a present knowing someone actually took time and put effort into thinking about what you like. But I feel even better when I've spent a day with my family, helping each other, reminiscing and not arguing. In my family we're all very headstrong and if we're unhappy or annoyed you'll know about it because the house is likely to sound like World War 3. But Christmas and Birthdays are an exception when even my brother and I get on, even if it is just for a day! Christmas especially is a time that we all really try to be nice to each other.

That being said, I am going to show you a few of my favourite presents because I love watching the 'What I got for Christmas' videos from Tanya, Fleur de Force and Zoe & Louise each year but I'm not yet confident to make a video!

One of the first presents I opened was a beautiful statement necklace from my grandad. It is possibly one of the most beautiful pieces of jewellery I've seen and it is definitely the nicest piece I own. I'm currently hunting through the sales for a black jumpsuit that I can wear with it!
The picture doesn't do the colours justice!

As mentioned in my November favourites post I'm a little bit in love with Jessie Ware so when I unwrapped her album I genuinely gasped. All of the tracks have something special about them, I highly recommend her album! I also got the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge album which features my favourite covers and acoustic versions of this year:

  1. Ed Sheeran - Stay with Me
  2. Haim - XO
  3. Bastille - We Can't Stop
  4. Tom Odell - Roar
  5. 5 Seconds of Summer - Amnesia
These two albums are definitely going to be on repeat in my car!

I've needed new a new hairdryer for months and months now and I finally got one! It's the Babyliss Elegance 2100 Dryer and while I'm yet to use it after a shower I did use it to dry my damp hair from running in the rain on Boxing Day and it is very powerful! I was also lucky enough to get these amazing Hair2Day hair straighteners from my parents which are especially designed for long, thick hair so they are perfect for me! They moisturise and shine my hair whilst leaving it poker straight! I'm in love with them already!

Ever since Zoe (Zoella) announced her book 'Girl Online' I've been dying to read it. And now I can say I have. I spent the whole of Boxing day morning in bed, reading it because I was dying to know what was going to happen to Penny and who Noah really was! I'll be honest and say it was a very easy read but I enjoyed it nonetheless! With it I received Tanya Burr's Midnight Sparkles nail polish. It was very easy to apply and only needed one coat to achieve good coverage. It is a very dark shade with bits of sparkle in it but I do wish the sparkle was a little more prominent.

Finally, it wouldn't be Christmas if I didn't get something One Direction related. I'd already received the calendar for 2015 from the Secret Santa we did in the rowing club but in my stocking I found pens and bookmarks (which I actually really needed even though I didn't know it!). My brother got me the 'Who We Are' book which I'm excited to read (and admire the endless photos of Harry) and the 'Where We Are tour DVD' which I will definitely be watching in the next few days to reminisce over Wembley (it seems like so long ago which makes me very sad).

My 'main' present from my parents was money as they know that's what I need the most but it was the final present I opened and to disguise it they put a cheque in an envelope and attached it to a box of One Direction tissues (they literally have everything don't they!). Upon seeing the tissues I missed the envelope and I was so confused as to why they'd told me to open it last but I quickly saw the envelope and squealed (not dissimilar to a pig) when I saw what it actually was. Turns out I also needed the tissues too, especially as I've now got the Fault in Our Stars DVD to watch!

Overall it was a lovely day and I didn't go to bed until 2am! TV is normally really exciting but the only shows I watched were Miranda which I thought was hilarious but also so sad, and Call the Midwife which I absolutely LOVED! It was lovely to actually spend time as a family downstairs because it's normally my brother in his room, me in mine and our parents downstairs but watching separate programmes on each of the TVs. Technology is great but it really does split up the family :(

Anyway, I hope you all had a lovely day!

Much Love

Dear Thirty Year Old Me

Dear thirty year old me,

Well, 17 year old me isn't really sure where to begin....

I feel like I should start from where I am heading soon...university. I don't feel old enough to be going to university, it feels like only last week I was starting secondary school. Anyway, I hope university, wherever you ended up, was amazing. I hope you made the most of it, making new friends, rowing (of course) and gained so much experience from it. Knowing you it took you a while to settle in and feel comfortable in new surroundings with strangers but I'm sure you took it all in your stride. I'm sure there are moments that you'd rather forget ever happened but I know there are hundreds that you'd love to relive.

I don't know what you did after uni, whether you decided to continue studying or you got a job but I hope you enjoyed it. Right now I have no idea what to do after university. I am fully aware of what I enjoy (and what I don't) but I have no clue about exactly what it is that I want to do. Don't worry though, I'm not panicking just yet! I really hope that you are happy in what ever you are doing now, a psychologist,  a rowing coach, a stay-at-home mum, anything.

I guess I hope you've settled down by now. I know for many people a family isn't a priority but for me it always has been. I really really hope he treats you well whoever he is, I hope he treats you how you deserve and spoils you. Perhaps you even have children by now? I know you'll be a good mum. If you don't, there's no need to worry, everything happens when it is meant to.

One thing I do hope is that you haven't stopped is rowing, Lets be honest, we were never really that good at sport! But finding rowing was possibly the best thing that has happened to us so far, it is one of the things that keeps me going, when school is stressful I'll just sweat it out. I don't blame you if you've reduced the intensity of training but I'm sure you're still keeping active, even if it is because it allows you to eat all the chocolate (you have ALWAYS had a sweet tooth!).

On the topic of rowing, you must have stayed in contact with some of the rowers at least? They are a second family to me and (so far) they are probably some of the best people I have met. You mustn't have forgotten some of your school friends though, they've been with you through thick and thin. I realise you will have many new friends, but please keep in touch with the old ones! If you haven't do it now. Message them on Facebook, or whatever new social network there is! It is always good to reminisce.

To say that I love One Direction right now is probably an understatement and as much as I really hope that they're still together, who knows what happens in 13 years? If they are I'm sure you still love them and I'm sure you'll still be getting teased about it to this day! But who cares right? I can only wonder what Harry's hair looks like, or how many new tattoos they all have and what their new music is like!

I guess the main point of this letter, thirty year old me, is that I hope you're happy. A lot of people have told you to stand up for yourself more because you just accept what people have to say too often. Don't let people get the better of you because YOU are the most important person. If you're not happy I know there are people who surround you, friends and family, who love you dearly. Including me.

November Favourites (sort of)

I realise we're very much into December now but I wanted to do my last favourites post of 2014! School has been extremely hectic as I've been racing to meet the UCAS deadline, had so much homework and so many events and activities! But we're now on Christmas so that's definitely a favourite of mine!

Music wise there are two artists, whose names begin with the letter J, who I think I can actually say I'm in love with. Jessie Ware and James Bay. Jessie Ware has released a new album and I've had Champagne Kisses and You and I (Forever) on REPEAT. I highly recommend the You and I video (which you can find here: http://youtu.be/Wo2QB2kqG_w  because it is adorable but so simple. James Bay has been a favourite of mine ever since I watched one of +hannah maggs vlogs with him in. I've managed to get tickets to see him in April and it can't come soon enough!

Now that winter is in full force and the average temperature appears to be 2 degrees I've definitely been layering up with jumpers and scarves. But my ultimate favourite is my burgundy beanie from Accessorize. I never really thought hats suited me but I LOVE this one. It is so cosy and I often pair it with my burgundy scarf and green Jack Wills coat. I think that the colours combine really nicely and I love how my hair looks with the hat!

Makeup has been generally quite basic and simple because I've just been at school the whole time but I have been obsessing with my Argan Oil from Ogx beauty. I've had so many friends comment on how soft and silky my hair is since I've used this product regularly after every wash.

Because it has been such a busy month I haven't read many books or watched a lot of TV but I have made some time for Netflix. My favourite show right now is Gossip Girl but I'm desperate for the next season of Orange is the New Black! I have also managed to spend (waste) a considerable amount of time on my tumblr. I don't know what is so addictive about reblogging photos?

I realise I have been neglecting this blog a little but I guess school and sleep has to take priority! My plan is to write loads of posts over Christmas and I'll be able to post them when I'm back at school!

Let It Go

'LET IT GOOOOO LET IT GOOOOOO DON'T HOLD IT BACK ANYMORE' yes these words may be the lyrics to one of the best (but also one of the most overplayed) song of the year but they're also a new mantra I'm trying to live by. For years I've been shy, introverted and uncomfortable with myself, especially in social situations or when the attention may be put onto me. However, more recently I'm becoming so much more comfortable and happy with myself and it's simply because I've started to let go.

When you actually think about it who really cares what you do? At times it can really feel like the whole world is watching you and at times lots of people will have their eyes on you, but it's not every minute of everyday. I'm pretty sure when you're having fun with your friends you rarely look at every single person and think 'what the hell are they doing?'. If you did it would reduce the fun you're having in your own group and quite frankly it's nasty! I know that when I'm out shopping or at school I'm involved in what my friends are doing, not what other people do. However, if someone is fooling around it's quite likely that i'll just look over at them and think that they look like they're enjoying themselves instead of judging.

I think one of the most important qualities a person can have is confidence because if you're confident you exude friendliness and warmth (but there is a very slim line between confidence and arrogance so don't cross it!). Be confident in yourself because you are the only you there is and that's great. The appropriately named 'Let It Go' by the glorious James Bay has a lovely lyric which says 'Why don't you be you and I'll be me' and I can't think of a better way to phrase it. Also, be HAPPY about being you, we only get one life so live it how you want to.

I recently did something so out of my comfort zone I may as well have been on a different planet but it made me feel so good about myself after. I dressed up as Santa and danced across a stage in front of 600+ people. If you know me you know that I don't dance, I don't perform and I despise being on stage but I simply thought to myself, it's my last year at school, screw it I'll do it! And I did it, I didn't trip, I didn't die and I actually enjoyed myself. I simply let go of what was holding me back for years and years before.

I look good right?

This time last year was my first Sixth Form disco but I didn't go because I had such a big panic attack I made myself ill. Fast forward to now and I went to the disco (in a bed sheet toga as my costume) and I had a great night. Yes, I had a drink before and during but again I simply let go. I stopped caring what others thought about me, my outfit, my makeup or my hair and I simply danced and enjoyed my last school disco. It always helps to have your friends with you and I'm lucky enough to have some amazing friends who stuck by my side the whole night because they knew I might get a little anxious (thank you, you know who you are!).

I used to be, and still am to a certain extent, very self conscious. I have quite a large forehead, I often hate being so tall and I worry about my appearance too much. But I think I'm slowly learning to accept myself. I can't change my forehead size, I can't change my height unless I break my legs or do something ridiculous so why should I worry about it. If you can't change something you might as well learn to love it instead of hating yourself! Life is here to be enjoyed and not to waste time worrying and disliking yourself!

So, moral of the story is: wear what you want, do what you want, dance how you want and BE HAPPY. There is nothing more important that your own happiness!

FOUR Deluxe Edition Review

I don't quite understand how we're already on the fourth One Direction album but I am so so happy about it. I love getting new music anyway but when it's One Direction and they've written it all themselves it makes it even better. I've decided to review the album track by track because I love it so much and I want to convert everyone to loving it, like I already have with some of my friends (Greenie)!

1. Steal My Girl
Well this was the first single released (apart from Fireproof) and I love it because it's such a fun song. It;s perfect to dance around your room to or sing in the shower (I of course have done both). I LOVE the video purely for the complete randomness of it and how  different it is to their other videos

2. Ready to Run
This was one of the tracks released in the week leading up to the album release and it's one of my favourites (I have many). I really like the guitar all the way through and how the song really picks up in the chorus with Harry's beautiful vocals. I love the lyrics too 'wherever you are is the place I belong'. I'm a soppy one I know!

3. Where Do Broken Hearts Go
Also an early release which is also one of my favourites. It's a song that makes me want to dance and I think all of the vocals are so so good on it. It was written by Harry and none of  the other boys and I know it's one of their favourite tracks which demonstrates Harry's  writing talent (if you haven't heard Ariana Grande's 'Just a Little Bit of Your Heart' listen  to it asap because it is so beautiful and written by Harry).

4. 18
Written by the wonderful and insanely talented Ed Sheeran I am deeply in love with this song. I think the lyrics are perfect, their vocals are so strong and it's just a perfect song. Good job Ed. This is the kind of song with lyrics that I wish applied to my life if that makes any sense? I listen to it and think 'I want this to happen to me' because it really is a beautiful love song.

5. Girl Almighty
I'll admit this isn't one of my top favourites but it is such a fun song to dance to. It's definitely a song that would cheer you up on a bad day. Liam's voice is pretty flawless on this track.

6. Fool's Gold
Okay this song is definitely a favourite. It's so calming, especially Niall's voice at the beginning, followed by Harry's as it goes into the chorus. When I first heard it when it was pre-released I listened to it on repeat, non-stop because it is just so pretty. All 5 boys contributed to writing this song which makes it quite special, especially as it is already one of my favourites. 'I'm not done yet, falling for you'

7. Night Changes
WORDS CANNOT EXPLAIN MY LOVE FOR THIS SONG. It's piano, their smooth voices, the beautiful lyrics written by all 5 boys (do you see a trend occurring?), it's just PERFECT. I'm unbelievably excited for the video, as I'm writing this they've released 2 teasers, one of Zayn and another of Louis and the audience is taken on a 'date' by the boys which kind of makes my heart melt a bit (and i haven't even seen Harry's part yet. God help me when I do!). 'It'll never change me and you'

8. No Control
Now, just like Girl Almighty I don't know how much I like this one. It's definitely a fun song and I can imagine on the tour that it'll be amazing but there's just something that keeps  making me skip it! It's still a really good song but I think because the others are SO SO  good I like this one a little less. Is that bad?

9. Fireproof
This one was released free when the album was announced and I immediately fell in love with it. The guitar really surprised me as there wasn't a great deal of this much guitar on 'Midnight Memories'. The harmonies on this are quite special!

10. Spaces
Yet another beautiful, slow song that I could so easily fall asleep to it's so calming. Like 'Fireproof' the harmonies on this are beautiful (I really need to expand my vocabulary!). The lyrics, written by Louis and Liam, are simply stunning. There are quite a few instances on the album when all the boys are singing and they are sounding so so good together I love it. Bring on the tour!

11. Stockholm Syndrome Written by the wonderful and perfect Mr Styles, I'm 99% sure this is my favourite track of the whole album. The lyrics, their voices, the tune, the guitar, the drums, literally everything I LOVE. This is definitely going to be amazing live, I can already see Harry on stage 'dancing' (or should I say prancing?) around the stage to it. There's little I can say about this other than how much I'm in love with it. 'I fear I'm getting used to being held by you'

12. Clouds
I wasn't sure about this one at first but I'm definitely growing to like it more. The chorus is my ultimate favourite part of this one. It's quite a shouty kind of chorus which is probably the best for me as I cannot sing at all, completely tone deaf (honestly ask anyone who knows me!) 'We're never coming back down, Yeah we're looking down on the clouds'

13.Change Your Ticket
My first thought was 'OH MY GOD THIS IS LIKE THE 1975'  and I love the 1975. My second thought was 'HARRY PLEASE STOP SINGING ABOUT ME GETTING BACK INTO BED WITH YOU BECAUSE I CANNOT COPE'. Along with Stockholm Syndrome,  Fool's Gold and Night Changes this is one of my top favourites. It was, again, written by all  5 of the boys (definitely a theme here) and I love driving home to it. I don't really know why but it is the perfect song to put on full volume and sing along, having a little dance (driving safely of course).

14.Illusion
Ah yes, Illusion, another one of my favourites (I have many okay please don't judge me). The chorus, again!, is so good and (of course) I love the lyrics. It's another one of those songs I want to happen to me. 'I promise falling for me won't be a mistake'

15. Once in a Lifetime
This album is crammed full of soft, guitar love songs and I'm not complaining. This isn't my favourite out of all of them (shocked? so am I!). But, of course, their harmonies on the chorus are glorious and the lyrics (again I want them to happen to me!) are so pretty, good job Payno.

16. Act My Age
I feel I'm in the complete minority when I say I FREAKING LOVE THIS SONG. It's fun, I love the lyrics because it makes me think of Harry with kids (and how could that not make anyone happy?!) and I just want to dance when I hear it. The whistle at the end, which I'm  98% sure is Harry, makes me laugh and I don't even know why. I JUST LOVE IT. 'When  I’m fat and old and my kids think I’m a joke, Cause the stories that I told, I tell again and again, I can count on you after all we got up to. Cause I know that you truly understand' (This needed a lot of lyrics because I couldn't chose my favourites!)
Help pls

Then is the beautiful video of the Behind the Scenes of the photoshoot. Highlights include:
  • Harry's appalling basketball
  • Liam getting the basketball in from sitting on a car
  • Harry's abundance of hats that make him look glorious
  • Narry photos
  • The Narry hug
  • Their wonderful outfits
F L A W L E S S

I realise now this is an extremely long, wordy post but I have a lot to say and nowhere and no one to say it to!

I really hope you all love the album as much as I do! It's already number 1 in 100 which is actually insane and I'm so so proud of the boys!

Which is your favourite track? Let me know in the comments please!!!!

50 Facts About ME!

So I'm tired and I want to write another post but I can't think of much. So I've decided to be completely unoriginal and do the 50 facts about me tag. I haven't planned this and I may really struggle to think of 50 facts but less give this a try.....
  1. I was born with a collapsed lung and pneumonia
  2. I'm around 6ft 2 tall
  3. I lived in London for the first 7 years of my life
  4. One of my favourite pictures of us
  5. I used to have a Welsh Cob called Daedalus and I LOVED him so much
